Remember the conclusion to Lord of the Rings? Where the eagles swoop in to grab Frodo from Mount Doom and everyone thinks: "well why didn't they just get the eagles to fly them in to start with?"
The answer to that particular question is, of course: "because that would have spoiled the story."
Dungeon Hunter 4 has its own mighty eagle, and it's called IAP. The thing is, this eagle is a greedy pest that constantly sticks its beak into your business, cawing 'Pay me! Pay me!' like some kind of mercenary Mr Cadburys Parrot.
Master swordsman
To be fair, Dungeon Hunter 4 is an extremely accomplished action-RPG. All of the Dungeon Hunter games are extremely accomplished action-RPGs.
In fact, right up until the last game we had very little to say against them. They've always had impressive 3D engines, solid controls, and plenty of hacky-slashy action, and satisfying character progression - provided you didn't mind a little grinding.
The good news is that Dungeon Hunter 4 is arguably the best yet in all of these areas. It looks fabulous, with a chunky, detailed - if generic - fantasy world that can throw a dozen or so intricate enemies at you whilst barely breaking a sweat.
The action is remarkably solid, too, as you guide one of four mystical warriors - a mighty swordsmen, a nimble dual-blade wielder, a powerful mage, or a crackshot archer - through assorted corridors and arena scraps.
Level-up
The virtual combat controls work beautifully. There's a virtual joystick for movement, which never misses a beat, and several virtual buttons for standard attacks and additional special abilities.
These special abilities can be earned or bought as you progress, and there's a welcome dose of strategy as you decide when to employ them.
As you defeat enemies your character will, unsurprisingly, level-up. As you do so, your health and energy (used for your special abilities) will increase.
In order to boost your attack power you'll need to improve or update your weaponry, and that's where Dungeon Hunter 4 starts to show its dark side.
An axe to grind
As you defeat enemies and discover treasure chests you'll be given new weapons, as well as new armour. The thing is, these are invariably rubbish. Occasionally you'll get a slightly better piece of kit, but in general you won't ever find an amazing new piece of weaponry that gives you a real advantage.
At least, I never encountered one in the hours I spent with the game.
Gameloft expects you to buy any seriously impressive new weaponry with gems, which cost real money. This is fine in the early stages, as you can get by with simply upgrading your existing equipment (which you can enhance with elemental and status-imbued gems) using the in-game coin currency, which is pretty plentiful.
Then you hit the first of the game's arena levels, which can be played in single-player or online multiplayer. These are grind-heavy areas in which you'll be attacked by successive waves of enemies. From making pretty serene - though just challenging enough - progress, I suddenly hit a brick wall of difficulty.
Even going back to previous areas and grinding through a few more levels and investing in upgrades for my existing equipment, I still found I was having my backside handed to me again and again.
It's not even possible to obtain more potions for mid-battle healing, as these are only available using gems - or by waiting several hours for a free one to appear.

Everything I’ll write here is pretty obvious from this game’s title. It’s Batman & The Flash: The Hero Run. There are two famous heroes from DC Comics, one of whom is more famous than the other, who participate in an infinite runner, chasing down different villains, one of whom is more pants-on-head retarded than the other. Batman is running down Gotham City, chasing down Joker, the dangerous psychotic murderer, while Flash is running in a gorilla city, after some giant gorilla, who is… trying to rule the world? I don’t know, I stopped caring after the part about the gorilla city.
The running part in Batman & The Flash: The Hero Run is actually pretty well done. It’s a 3D runner, not unlike Temple Run, but it’s combat-oriented. There are three lanes, and the hero can switch between them, jump and slide to avoid obstacles, but they can also shoot their weapons at the oncoming enemies, which are divided into three groups. Batman & The Flash Hero Run 2The weak ones don’t deal any damage to them whatsoever, and you don’t have to waste your ammo to defeat them, but you won’t get as much experience. The strong ones can incapacitate the hero, and require two shots to be kicked down. At last, there are bosses that can only be met once in a while, and require a special strategy to handle them. The ammo is expendable and requires purchasing from the shop with the coins that are scattered around the levels. The coins can also be spent on upgrading the power-ups, and unlocking special power cards, as well as hero cards. Power cards are just the power-ups that are expended after use. Also, I still don’t understand the reason to level the hero cards, but it sure gives the gameplay some additional depth.
There are actually more heroes than just Batman and The Flash, but it takes lots of time to unlock them. There are different levels as well. The Gotham City is the easiest one, Banana City or whatever, is more difficult, and afterward, more challenging locations are unlocked. The levels are quite varied, and almost don’t have repeated segments.
In general, I’d say that Batman & The Flash: The Hero Run is a great game. It’s not that unique, but for a free-to-play runner, based on popular comics characters, it’s well done and is quite pleasing. Graphics are good, variety is good, the mechanics are good and Batman is awesome. Definitely not a bad way to spend several hours.

Delightful sweet-toothed monster Om Nom is back, as are more wonderfully complex puzzles keeping him and his candy apart. Along for the ride is a whole slew of colorful new characters, the Nommies, who add extra depth to the tricky levels that each come complete with three stars to earn and extra goals to achieve. Even the microtransactions are cute this time around. Ultimately, the mix of intricate puzzles and delightful characters makes for a short but incredibly sweet journey.
Even though there are some new cuddly critters on the block, Om Nom is still the star of this show, and the candy-loving monster has never looked so animated and charming as he does in his new customizable hats. Poking him makes him wiggle around, which is always enjoyable, and now he'll even watch as you figure out puzzle mechanics either above or below him. I also got quite a few laughs when he tumbled off cliffs with a "Wheeeee!" But it was seeing Om Nom swim for the first time that was hands-down my favorite new animation. It's utterly adorable.
His taste in puzzles hasn't changed much, though. As such, neither has the gameplay. Just like in the first Cut the Rope, navigating Om Nom through complex physics puzzles to reach his candy offers a great sense of accomplishment, and I felt like an absolute genius when I solved a few of them.
The main difference between this Cut the Rope and the last is Om Nom’s new friends, the Nommies. There are five total, each with their own set of levels and helpful puzzle mechanics to help get Om Nom his candy. My favorite is Blue, an apathetic Nommie compared to his cheerful counterparts. Touching Blue causes him to make replicas of himself that stack on top of each other until they all collapse into a heap that can be used as a bridge or ladder; mashing my finger to spawn as many Blues as I could was ridiculously amusing. Sometimes I spawned so many that they pushed Om Nom to his death (complete with a Wheeee!) but it was too silly to stop.
